June 2019 Side Street Design Studio Monthly Art Inspiration Challenge

June 2019 Side Street Design Studio Monthly Art Inspiration Challenge

Happy Saturday,

Phew is it really June. For most people that means kids out of school, summer plans, summer vacations. For makers like me, I am thinking about the fall holiday season. I know I know it’s still months away right, but my brain is going. I am thinking of all the wonderful tutorial videos I want to make and share with you guys for the holiday season. So on top of that brainstorming, I took a little holiday myself this month. I went to visit my sister in Texas and in doing so rediscovered my love of vintage treasure hunting! So expect to see some of that mixed in on my site now as well.

Now I know what you are really here for so let’s get to it! It’s the second Saturday in June, which means over on the Side Street Design Studio Facebook Group I have released the June prompt card and challenge. If you would like to follow along please be sure to click this link, and head on over to the page and join in the fun. You can easily download the prompt card there and post your own version of art. Join us as we strive to think outside the box each month and come up with new ways to love our favorite supplies.

Here were this month’s prompts:

So for this month I went to work in my Dylusions black journal and took on the challenge of shimmer sprays. I love collage and I was determined to use it with these water reactive sprays. It was a little bit of a challenge, but in the end, I loved the result. I also have noticed I am on a bit of a cat theme lately it seems. Nothing wrong with that though. We got to go with what we feel.

You can watch the process video on my Youtube channel: June 2019 Side Street Design Studio Prompt Challenge

Here are photos of the finished page:

So here are some tips and tricks I learned from doing this page:

1. You can use a white china marker to write over Dylusions sprays when they are dry and so far the spray has not absorbed the white!
2. If you want to collage over shimmer sprays, apply the collage medium to the back of the tissue off page, then gently place the tissue on the page. Use a brush on top of the tissue to gently dab it down. Do not apply the collage directly to the page or all your colors will run.
3. Remember Dylusions Sprays are water reactive so although they dry they will reactivate if wet. Keep that in mind if you are journaling, so you know how to work your we layers first.
4. Have fun! Keep pushing thru!

I look forward to seeing your work over in our facebook group!

May 2019 Side Street Design Studio Monthly Journal Prompts Challenge

May 2019 Side Street Design Studio Monthly Journal Prompts Challenge

Hello,

As I type this post for you today it is a stormy day in Florida. Rain all afternoon, the wind blowing, so it felt like a good time to pour some tea and have a chat with you folks. When you read this it will be the second Saturday of May and as it turns out that is my birthday! That’s right I will be turning 36 this year. As I look back on the year so far it’s been a bit of a hectic start, but there has been good in the year too. February marked my 5 years being cancer free! What a way to start out my 36th year. I also look back to this time last year, I was just starting my blog and my youtube channel, only 5 months in. Then I had 16 followers on youtube and I thought am I crazy to do this. Flash forward to now I have 350 followers on youtube and many lovely followers on my blog as well. So on my birthday I just want to say thank you. Thank you to my followers and friends for sticking with me and stopping by to see what is new. You are the reason I keep going, and with that let’s jump into this month’s challenge page!

It’s the second Saturday in May, which means over on the Side Street Design Studio Facebook Group I have released the May prompt card and challenge. If you would like to follow along please be sure to click this link, and head on over to the page and join in the fun. You can easily download the prompt card there and post your own version of art. Join us as we strive to think outside the box each month and come up with new ways to love our favorite supplies.

Here were this month’s prompts:

So for this month, I am really into my new Dina Wakley Media White journal. The paper is heavy duty and you can really make a mess in it. The small 6″ x 6″ size makes it ideal for quick journal pages and travel. I am also trying to work harder to put more of me in my journaling. I love photos and I use to be huge on scrapbook albums but not the days get so busy I don’t sit to do the scrapbooking I use to. That’s why I was happy to have pulled the prompt to “use a personal photo” in this month’s journal. It is a quick and fun way to capture moments in time. Some of the supplies I ended up using this month were Dina Wakley Media Paint in peacock, magenta, lime, and buff. I used her new stencils X’s and Cat Head. I threw in a little stabillo scribbling and of source Dina Wakley Media Collage Tissue Paper for my ephemera and quote.

The lime and magenta were new colors for me and boy oh boy are they now my favorite. I loved how they really just popped off the page and accented the black and white.

I hope you will join in the fun and that I will see your art over in the facebook group. Thanks for stopping by and sharing my birthday with me. Hugs!

It’s the second Saturday in April, which means over on the Side Street Design Studio Facebook Group I have released the April prompt card and challenge. Now this month was really a challenge for me. The coins I picked out really narrowed the field with only being allowed to use two colors, but I made it work. Just because the prompt says two colors doesn’t mean you can’t use various tones of that color. Also black and white are neutrals so you can add those as accents. This type of prompt was also a great way to start digging into that magazine collage stash I have been hoarding for just the right day. That was one of my goals this year by setting up these monthly prompts. I wanted to help mix old with new and destash some of my goodies.

To get the full scoop you can watch my video over on youtube: April 2019 SSDS Monthly prompt challenge

Here are photos of the finished journal page. Loved the color combo!

I really loved this page in the end. I had so much fun in my large Dylusions journal. I combined Tim Holtz Collage Tissue with Dylusions Paint, some Tim Holtz Stamps and a magazine rose. A really fun and easy journal page. You can find a full list of all the supplies I used below in case you’d like to add some to your stash or just to see if you have some of the items I used. March 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

March 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello, my crafting family,

I am finally back with you. Phew. This has been an awful season for those of us with allergies. My cold took me out for three weeks, one of which I spent a full week in bed. It feels so wonderful to be back and crafting with you. I am just in time for March’s Side Street Design Studio Monthly Art Challenge. I had a lot of fun making the page for today’s share. I am finding that I think some of my favorite pages I do when journaling are ones that include photos of me that hold a memory. Perhaps it’s that closeness that makes them so special.

Well, without further ado here is the prompt card for March: Download your copy

You can see my process video over on Youtube: March 2019 Side Street Design Studio Challenge
This month I got to play with some of Tim Holtz’s new goodies. My super speedy shipment from scrapbook.com came just in time. I used his new collage paper, journal cards, and distress archival inks, along with some old staples like distress collage medium in vintage and matte finish.

Here are some photos of my finished journal page:

For those of you who don’t know what Side Street Design Studio is, it’s a group I created over on facebook where I release a prompt card each month, on the second Saturday and you can join in and post what you make from the prompts. Come join us.

Below is the complete list of supplies I used. Please note these links are affiliate links and any purchases you make, I receive a small commission from which allows me to keep running my Youtube channel and blog and sharing my love of art with you.

February 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

February 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello!

Welcome to my second monthly inspiration art journal challenge. Just a quick recap for those who are new, I started a facebook group where each month on the second Saturday of the month I release as a set of prompts to be used to inspire you to create. You can then post your finished piece in the group. It is a great way to keep creating and thinking outside the box.

If you are interested in joining in on the monthly fun here is the link to the facebook group: Facebook Group

Now, remember this is all for fun. There are no strict rules. For example, if you don’t have a Dylusions journal you can still do this challenge use what you have. I just have a Dylusions journal listed to help keep me using the journals I already have. Now you can use all five main prompts, you can swap some out for the alternatives or use all seven. You can even only use one or two. This is just to get those creative juices flowing. I can’t wait to see what you make and how you interpret the prompts. I look forward to seeing you over in the facebook group.

Here are some photos of my finished piece:
If you love the girl image I used, it’s one of my new cabinet card digital downloads. You can purchase yours in my Etsy shop to use in your creations: Cabinet Card Girls

This page I struggled with to start with but loved it in the end. I find myself fluctuating between vintage soft and then bright colors. Some days I want a pop of color and some days I want something softer. I hope this page will inspire you and I look forward to seeing what you make!

January 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello!

I am so excited to share this page with you today. This is the first page from my new Side Street Design Studio Group where each month I release a set of prompts to create a piece of art. I started this group as a way to share art with others and see what they do. It will also help me to keep using many of my art supplies that might otherwise collect dust. Also, a monthly challenge is just good for those creative juices. It gets us out of our comfort zone, combining things we may not have combined before and making a big fabulous mess.

If you are interested in joining in on the monthly fun here is the link to the facebook group: Facebook Group

Here is a link to my Youtube Video so you can see how I made my piece: January 2019 Monthly Challenge

This challenge was a great way for me to break the ice and start back to work in my journals after the holiday break. I tried to stick to mainly Dina Wakley Ranger Ink supplies for this challenge as I knew they would all flow together nicely.

Even though the first prompt was to work on a canvas I tried to think outside my box, originally I was going to use an actual canvas but then I remembered the canvas fabric in my Large Dina Wakley Media journal and everything flowed from there.

Here are some photos of my finished piece:

I really loved how the colors turned out and I only used scribble sticks or the Dina Wakley media paints in matching colors. By limiting my supplies it really freed me up to create a very soothing and inspirational piece.

I hope you will join me next month for February’s challenge, I can’t wait to see what you create!
