April 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

It’s the second Saturday in April, which means over on the Side Street Design Studio Facebook Group I have released the April prompt card and challenge. If you would like to follow along please be sure to click this link, and head on over to the page and join in the fun. You can easily download the prompt card there and post your own version of art. Join us as we strive to think outside the box each month and come up with new ways to love our favorite supplies.

Here were this month’s prompts:

Now this month was really a challenge for me. The coins I picked out really narrowed the field with only being allowed to use two colors, but I made it work. Just because the prompt says two colors doesn’t mean you can’t use various tones of that color. Also black and white are neutrals so you can add those as accents. This type of prompt was also a great way to start digging into that magazine collage stash I have been hoarding for just the right day. That was one of my goals this year by setting up these monthly prompts. I wanted to help mix old with new and destash some of my goodies.

To get the full scoop you can watch my video over on youtube: April 2019 SSDS Monthly prompt challenge

Here are photos of the finished journal page. Loved the color combo!

I really loved this page in the end. I had so much fun in my large Dylusions journal. I combined Tim Holtz Collage Tissue with Dylusions Paint, some Tim Holtz Stamps and a magazine rose. A really fun and easy journal page. You can find a full list of all the supplies I used below in case you’d like to add some to your stash or just to see if you have some of the items I used. (Please note: these are affiliate links which means any purchases made thru them I receive a small percentage of and that helps me to keep running this blog and my Youtube channel, and sharing my love of art with you)

March 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello, my crafting family,

I am finally back with you. Phew. This has been an awful season for those of us with allergies. My cold took me out for three weeks, one of which I spent a full week in bed. It feels so wonderful to be back and crafting with you. I am just in time for March’s Side Street Design Studio Monthly Art Challenge. I had a lot of fun making the page for today’s share. I am finding that I think some of my favorite pages I do when journaling are ones that include photos of me that hold a memory. Perhaps it’s that closeness that makes them so special.

Well, without further ado here is the prompt card for March: Download your copy

You can see my process video over on Youtube: March 2019 Side Street Design Studio Challenge
This month I got to play with some of Tim Holtz’s new goodies. My super speedy shipment from scrapbook.com came just in time. I used his new collage paper, journal cards, and distress archival inks, along with some old staples like distress collage medium in vintage and matte finish.

Here are some photos of my finished journal page:

For those of you who don’t know what Side Street Design Studio is, it’s a group I created over on facebook where I release a prompt card each month, on the second Saturday and you can join in and post what you make from the prompts. Come join us.

Below is the complete list of supplies I used. Please note these links are affiliate links and any purchases you make, I receive a small commission from which allows me to keep running my Youtube channel and blog and sharing my love of art with you.

February 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello!

Welcome to my second monthly inspiration art journal challenge. Just a quick recap for those who are new, I started a facebook group where each month on the second Saturday of the month I release as a set of prompts to be used to inspire you to create. You can then post your finished piece in the group. It is a great way to keep creating and thinking outside the box.

If you are interested in joining in on the monthly fun here is the link to the facebook group: Facebook Group

Now, remember this is all for fun. There are no strict rules. For example, if you don’t have a Dylusions journal you can still do this challenge use what you have. I just have a Dylusions journal listed to help keep me using the journals I already have. Now you can use all five main prompts, you can swap some out for the alternatives or use all seven. You can even only use one or two. This is just to get those creative juices flowing. I can’t wait to see what you make and how you interpret the prompts. I look forward to seeing you over in the facebook group.

Here are some photos of my finished piece:
If you love the girl image I used, it’s one of my new cabinet card digital downloads. You can purchase yours in my Etsy shop to use in your creations: Cabinet Card Girls

This page I struggled with to start with but loved it in the end. I find myself fluctuating between vintage soft and then bright colors. Some days I want a pop of color and some days I want something softer. I hope this page will inspire you and I look forward to seeing what you make!

January 2019 Monthly Inspiration Challenge Art Journal Page

Hello!

I am so excited to share this page with you today. This is the first page from my new Side Street Design Studio Group where each month I release a set of prompts to create a piece of art. I started this group as a way to share art with others and see what they do. It will also help me to keep using many of my art supplies that might otherwise collect dust. Also, a monthly challenge is just good for those creative juices. It gets us out of our comfort zone, combining things we may not have combined before and making a big fabulous mess.

If you are interested in joining in on the monthly fun here is the link to the facebook group: Facebook Group

Here is a link to my Youtube Video so you can see how I made my piece: January 2019 Monthly Challenge

This challenge was a great way for me to break the ice and start back to work in my journals after the holiday break. I tried to stick to mainly Dina Wakley Ranger Ink supplies for this challenge as I knew they would all flow together nicely.

Even though the first prompt was to work on a canvas I tried to think outside my box, originally I was going to use an actual canvas but then I remembered the canvas fabric in my Large Dina Wakley Media journal and everything flowed from there.

Here are some photos of my finished piece:

I really loved how the colors turned out and I only used scribble sticks or the Dina Wakley media paints in matching colors. By limiting my supplies it really freed me up to create a very soothing and inspirational piece.

I hope you will join me next month for February’s challenge, I can’t wait to see what you create!

I’m back!…. Well almost back!

Hi guys. I am so happy to be typing to you again and sharing with you. I became sick just before Christmas and it knocked me for a loop. I was sick for over three weeks and I am finally on the tail end of it. Lots of good things going on in 2019. Be sure to check out my Youtube channel for little behind the scenes snippets and treats.

The reason I pulled out the laptop tonight to sit with you guys is to let you know I have a new project. One which I am very excited for. I have created a new facebook monthly challenge group. I sat down and made a three-page list of prompts, which you can download for free. You can use this list as you like to help you on your creative journey or you can follow along with me each month. On the second Saturday of each month, I will pull five main prompts and two alternate prompts. I will then create a piece of art. The video will be on my youtube channel and I will make up a card with the prompts to post in the facebook group. In the group, you can share your art you make. I really look forward to connecting with you guys this way in the new year.

You can watch my intro video here that talks a little more about the prompts here: New Monthly Inspiration Prompt Group

You can download the master prompt file here: Master Prompt File

Come join the facebook group here: Side Street Design Studio

I can’t wait to see you guys there!

PS stay tuned my studio is in makeover mode again so before and after photos will be coming along soon!

Tim Holtz Altered Paper Doll ATC (Artist Trading Card)

Tim Holtz Altered Paper Doll ATC (Artist Trading Card)

Good Morning,

As I write this post today my heart is with the people on the east coast in the Carolinas and Virginia as hurricane Florence pounds the shoreline. Living in Florida for almost seventeen years now I have been through six memorable hurricanes, one was the month of my wedding and I know the emotional and physical strain these events put on a person. So before I begin, thoughts and prayers with the people of the Carolina’s and all those affected by this storm.

On this Monday I thought I would start your week out with a little shimmer. I am in an ATC (Artist Trading Card) group on facebook. Each month there is a prompt and we can sign up to swap a trading card and share a few treasures from our stash. For this card, the theme was “Bippity Boppity”, so I ran with that.  To make the card I used the following:

  1. A piece of watercolor paper (heavyweight) cut to 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″
  2. I did a layer of Distress oxide on top of the card in Antique Linen and Seedless Preserves
  3. I pulled out a girl doll from the Tim Holtz Paper doll collection.
  4. I colored her using my Big Brush Pitt Pens in Cobalt Green, Magenta Bright, and LIght Flesh.
  5. I dried everything well with my Ranger Heat Tool
  6. I went back over the girls dress using a VersaMark Pen (Embossing Pen) and I applied from SparkleNSprinkle an Indian Spark (light blue) embossing powder. Them I used my embossing gun to set the powder.
  7. I then decided the background on the card needed some sparkle as well.
  8. I used the Technique Junkies “Stencil Rings” stamp with Versamark embossing pad to add circles to the background. I then used the Ranger Ink Bridal Tinsel white embossing powder over it with my heat gun to set.
  9. I then took out my quote from Dyan Reaveley I cut into strips. I edged the quote pieces with my Big Brush Pen in Cobalt Green.
  10. I went around the edge of the AT with my Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide to pull all the blue’s together.
  11. I applied my quote pieces first with glue that didn’t stick to the embossing, so I used foam adhesive dots.

and that was it! A fun way to alter your Tim Holtz paper dolls!

You can see the process video here: Altered Tim Holtz Paper Doll ATC

Here are some close-ups of the card:

One of the things I love about working on ATC’s is the limits the size puts on what you do. Trying to create art is such a confined area is a really great way to again get out of your comfort zone and test the boundaries of what you can do. Plus it is fun to have these mini pieces of art go off into the world and bring a smile to someone’s face.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Dust off those Tim Holtz Paper Doll’s and let’s have a play!
